Think on these things – Devotional – PURE

Whatsoever things are PURE

The Greek word translated as pure is listed in the Strong’s Concordance as G53 – HAGNOS. It is pronounced HAG noss. The biblical usage is listed as innocent, modest, perfect: chaste, clean, pure.

The contemporary definition of pure is:

definition: wholesome and untainted by immorality, especially that of a sexual nature.
synonyms: virtuous · moral · ethical · good · righteous · saintly · pious · honorable · reputable · wholesome · clean · honest · upright · upstanding · exemplary · above reproach · irreproachable · innocent · chaste · decent · worthy · noble · blameless · guiltless · sinless · stainless · spotless · unsullied · unblemished · unspoiled · unaffected · uncorrupted · undefiled · immaculate · impeccable

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:8 KJV

Purity as a way of life

Many of the synonyms listed above make me think of Yeshua, our Passover lamb – the One that takes away the sins of the world. He was worthy, innocent, blameless, sinless, spotless, unblemished.

As we see in the passage from 1 Peter below, when we live a pure, chaste, upstanding life, not only does our Heavenly Father see our behavior, but others observe and see that as a witness.

What behaviors do we portray in our daily lives that are less than pure? What message are we giving when we speak unclean things while wearing a cross around our neck? Or when we cut someone off in traffic only to display that fish on the back bumper of our car?

Scriptures related to Purity

1 Peter 3:1-2 (AMP) Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation (behavior, way of life) coupled with fear.

2 Corinthians 11:2 (NKJV) For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to alter my thoughts so that my behavior is pure before You and those around me. So that I may be a suitable witness in my actions before my friends, family and strangers.

Amen
