Verse of the Week:
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
James 1:17 NKJV
As we say goodbye to the Christmas season this week, was it all you hoped it would be? Did you receive the perfect gift, the one you were hoping for? Were all your gifts good, or will you be re-gifting a few? I usually feel overwhelmed by all the gift giving and gift receiving at Christmas. It is a daunting task to find the perfect gift for each person on your list, isn’t it?
Isn’t it a relief to know that our Father never has to sweat and fret picking out the perfect gift for us? He has gifted each of us with the good and perfect gifts that suit us, that fit us, and that, if we allow them to, will make us more like His Son, Jesus. His gifts never wear out or break or go out of style. My gifts can never measure up to that standard. In our materialistic culture, we tend to think of gifts in terms of things or money. God’s gifts can be these things, too, but His gifts are so much more.
As we get ready to head into a fresh new year (Oh! The possibilities!), reflect on God’s perfect gifts to you throughout your life, and be thankful.
Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
2 Corinthians 9:15
Live it out this week
As you close out this year and look forward to the next, stop and consider the perfect gifts that God has lavished on you. You might think it is difficult to find even mediocre gifts, let alone good and perfect gifts from God in the year that kept on giving us one bad “gift” after another. But God still gives His good gifts in spite of us, in spite of circumstances.
Here’s a couple of obvious ones to get you started: His love, His grace, His creation, His Son, His Spirit, His righteousness, His peace, His salvation.
Now, get more specific with the gifts that maybe only you know about.
Read Romans 5:15-21 for more about God’s perfect gift of salvation through Jesus.
See 1 Corinthians 12 on the gifts of the Spirit.
Father of lights, thank You for being the giver of perfect gifts. Thank You for the gift of Jesus. Help me to see and receive all the gifts You have made especially for me. Show me how to give good gifts to others every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
