VOW: Whose words do you live by?

Verse of the week

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10 KJV

The other day I picked up a small give-away calendar with a quote for each month. One of the quotes that caught my attention because I knew it was not true. Even though it is a famous and very old quote.

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”

Aristotle

Proverbs 9:10 immediately came to mind – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Aristotle was mistaken. His thinking comes from worshiping the creature rather than the creator.

We are called to follow Christ and obey His commands. Not to know ourselves. We are nothing without our God and Savior.

Knowing Him is the beginning of wisdom and life.

Live it out this week

This week think about what sayings, quotes, verses guide your life. Do the sayings and quotes line up with God’s word?

If not, replace the false statements no matter how good they sound with sound statements from the word of God. His words are true and life giving.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to live by faith in You and Your word. Not by the world’s sayings, misunderstandings, and lies. Show me how to order my life according to Your paths. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

  1. Proverbs 9:10 uses the Tetragrammaton (name), not the title in the capital “LORD”.
    The title “Lord” becomes “אדני”
How would you write “Lord Jehovah” in English?
Will you double “LORD LORD” ???
How do you write in English? “Jah Jehovah” in Exodus 17:16 ???

    1. You are correct that the Hebrew word translated as LORD in the verse is the Tetragrammaton – YHVH. Regarding your questions about how to write Lord Jehovah in English. Depending on the Hebrew being translated as Lord Jehovah (or Yehovah) it may be translated as you suggested, or as Adonai Yehovah, or perhaps Lord GOD. Regarding Exodus 17:16 the first instance of LORD in that verse, according to the Strong’s Concordance, is Yah. The second instance is Yehovah.
