Verse of the Week:
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.
Proverbs 4:1-2 NIV
When I read this verse I can’t help but think about the admonition that our Heavenly Father gave to the parents through Moses before they entered into the Promised Land.
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NIV
A few other verses come to mind too.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
Psalms 111:10 KJV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16 KJV
Let’s wrap all these verses up in a nice Father’s Day bow. As our earthly, Godly fathers instruct us, they are following the command of our Heavenly Father to constantly instruct us in the things of God. They are teaching us to fear the LORD, because they know that is where wisdom starts. And by following the ways of God we will gain wisdom and understanding.
By taking heed to our fathers and storing up the Word of God and their examples in our hearts, we will walk as men and women of God.
Live it out this week
Thank your Heavenly Father for your early father today and every day. If your father is still with you, pray for him daily. If you are missing your father today, thank God for him, and pray that you will be able to live by the example he left for you. If your father was not the example depicted in our scriptures, look to your Heavenly Father to guide you and bring people into your life to mentor you and pray for you.
If you are a father, walk out the verses above and search out other verses to help you be the very best father you can be.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for fathers, the ones that are still with us, the ones who have passed on. Thank You for the examples they were and are for us and the lessons they have taught us. I ask You to bless each father represented by those reading this and comfort those who are missing their father today. In Yeshua’s name Amen.
