Counting of the Omer

NEW: Link to Shavuot Haggadah available at bottom of page in Downloads section.

You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering.  You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the Lord. Leviticus 23:15-16 ESV

There are no real guidelines in the Bible for counting the Omer other than to begin the count the day after the day the First Fruits sheaf is waved.  There are some controversies around which shabbat is being referred to in the scripture above, the weekly Sabbath or the High Sabbath of the first day of Unleavened Bread.

The really short version of the reason why is, when the Temple was destroyed, Rabbi Hillel came up with a calendar for observing the Feasts of Yehovah. Depending on how you interpret Sabbath in the Leviticus instructions, is when you start your Omer count.

Select the day to start your count and count each day until Shavuot/Pentecost.  If you attend a Christian denomination that observes Pentecost, I suggest starting the Omer count so it will end coinciding with your church’s observance of Pentecost. Or observe Shavuot/Pentecost twice.

We do know that during the first 40 days of the Omer count Jesus/Yeshua was seen by many people and met with his disciples several times.  They were with him on the 40th day of the count when he ascended back to the Father. He told them then to remain in Jerusalem until Pentecost/Shavuot until they were empowered from on high.

We also know that they met daily at the temple and were in agreement with each other. Then on Shavuot/Pentecost the Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh fell on each of them. They were empowered – they began to share the Good News in other languages, and many believed and were added to the congregation – 3000 to be exact.

We can use these 50 days to reflect on the events of 2000 years ago, how we can improve our relationship with Yeshua and others, and how we can better reflect Yeshua to those around us. Unlike Lent, we are not asked to give up anything during this time. We should use these 50 days to draw closer to God and be a witness for Him.

Traditionally each week of the Omer count is focused on a spiritual quality that we all need to have evidenced in our lives.

  1. Loving-kindness, benevolence
  2. Justice, discipline, strength, restraint, awe
  3. Harmony, compassion, balance, beauty
  4. Endurance, fortitude, ambition
  5. Humility, splendor
  6. Foundation, bonding (to God)
  7. Kingdom, nobility, sovereignty, leadership

To help you do that, each day includes a Messianic blessing, the Omer count, a daily verse to memorize and meditate on, a weekly focus challenge, and prayer, to get your conversation with the Father started.

The Omer count is complete: Today is the Feast of Weeks.

Just think, 2000 years ago, the disciples woke up and declared, Today is the Feast of Weeks.  They were probably a bit less excited about the holiday than in years past. It had been ten days since they had seen Yeshua for the last time and many of them saw Him ascend to be with the Father. They may not have felt like celebrating at all. But as they began the morning prayers Shavuot activities, something happened…

Verse: When the Day of Pentecost (Shavuot) had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 NKJV

Bonus Verse: Let every thing that has breath praise Yehovah. Halleluyah!
(Psalm 150:6 TLV)

Focus Challenge: Today focus on allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you in all your endeavors.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your grace and mercy. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit. Help me to learn to be sentitive to Your Spirit and yield to His leading today and every day.
